Sarah’s Bat Mitzvah
“Growing up is never easy. You hold on to things that were. You wonder what’s to come. But that night, I think we knew it was time to let go of what had been, and look ahead to what would be. Other days. New days. Days to come.” – The Wonder Years
I love 12 year old girls (and The Wonder Years!), yet the age absolutely terrifies me as a mother. Everything about this stage is so fleeting as each day that passes is one more day of childhood gone. As I watched Sarah skip towards me in this stunning gown (and 3 inch heels!), I was stuck by this unique time. Sarah still has that sweet innocence of a little girl, with the poise and confidence of an older teen. She still holds onto her parents while figuring out how to spread her wings. She tells silly stories and has inside jokes with her friends.
In several conversations I’ve had with Sarah’s mom, she commented on how proud she was of Sarah. Sure, we’re all proud of our kids. But after spending the morning with Sarah I got it. Sarah is a remarkable kid. She’s smart and still works hard. She’s fun and sweet, and one of the most genuine people I’ve met. She adores her little sister and looks up to her big brother – and they’re pretty lucky to have her sandwiched in between them. Sarah we’re all super proud of you, and I look forward to meeting the teen and young adult you’re quickly becoming. Mazal tov on your big day!
